“Baba” Watercolour Feb 2022

Set of 3 mountains in watercolour; Mt. Everest, Machu Picchu, Kilimanjaro

My client asked for 3 x A5 paintings of the mountains their mother has climbed as a birthday present for her, requesting a mountain scenery with natural watercolour bleeds, blends and textures.

I wanted to make sure we got the colours, composition and style right before I started painting on paper so I used procreate to make thumbnails of the mountains. My client wanted the colour scheme to be influenced by the colours of each mountain’s country and culture in the paintings so after some research I presented them with the first set of thumbnails. After some feedback, I revised the thumbnails based on their likes and suggestions. They picked their favourite colour composition from the second set of thumbnails and it was time to move on to testing these colours on paper.

I had a lot of fun trying out many types of watercolour paper for this commission, practising and testing different brush techniques, line art, composition, colour combinations etc. For example, I had to find a delicate balance of what blues to use in the sky and on the mountain for Mt. Everest to differentiate between the two planes but keep them harmonious. For the sky I used warmer blues (ultramarines) and cooler hues (phthalo) on the mountain. After a final consultation with the client, I painted the three final mountains.
